Sometimes, the stories that we come across here at Off The Bench are a little strange and this one about a group of Iowa baseball players might be an all-timer.

The story goes that the group of five University of Iowa baseball players and a hockey player recently started living in a house on North Dubuque Street near campus and started experiencing strange phenomena inside the house from televisions changing channels by themselves, chairs moving in the kitchen and seeing apparitions.

The players enlisted the help of a Iowa Paranormal Activity Support Team to see if they had ghosts or not and it appears from their findings, they do:

Creaking floors, inexplicable cold drafts and eerie sounds usually don’t top the list of dream house features.

Unless, of course, we’re talking about dream haunted house features.

It’s October, and we’re forgoing the usual roundup of eye candy in favor of some cobweb-draped places most people wouldn’t dare put a down payment on.

Tales of horror, glimpses of ghosts and a bevy of cobweb decor — it’s all here.

Bones found in Emmitt House basement during a paranormal investigation July 30, 2012

PPR Co-founder Rosalyn Bown was in attendance when bones were discovered buried in the basement of the haunted Emmitt House in Waverly, OH.

WAVERLY –A paranormal investigation at the Emmitt House turned into a police investigation Saturday night when bones were found in the basement.

Ashley Cramer, 25, and Levi Anthony, 31, of Troy-based Eyes of the Paranormal, knew since entering the Emmitt House in 2011 it was the most active of about 300 places they’ve been in during the past six years. However, they never thought an investigation conducted as part of their three-day PTVN ParaCon event would reveal bones.

Ashley said the discovery unfolded as a medium –someone who has a special sensitivity to the paranormal –was walking through the Emmitt House. She sensed there were bones underneath some concrete slabs in the basement and that the slabs had eroded enough to be lifted.

“We were able to lift them up, and we brushed the dirt away and found bones,” Ashley said.

Immediately, they contacted the Waverly Police Department, which ordered the basement be blocked off from visitors until they can process the scene. Further details on the find were not immediately available, but a dispatcher at the Waverly Police Department confirmed they were investigating the discovery of the bones.

Are the Miami Heat staying at haunted hotel during the NBA Finals? June 15, 2012

According to legend, the Skirvin Hilton Hotel in Oklahoma City — where the Miami Heat are staying on their NBA Finals road trip — is haunted.

A pair of onetime New York Knicks believes it, including current Miami player Eddy Curry.

Chicago Bulls forward Taj Gibson really believes it, as he told ESPNChicago.com’s Nick Friedell.

Shawn Marion once saw something pretty scary there, which he shared with ESPN Dallas’ Skin Wade.

While the Heat might not believe it all that much, Bill Simmons in 2010 stayed the night and, well …

… I woke up at 4:30 with my heart pounding. I swear on Tom Brady’s ACLs that the following happened: At first, I heard a baby crying and realized that was why I woke up. I thought it was one of my own kids before remembering that my kids weren’t babies anymore, then remembering that I was in Oklahoma City and not Los Angeles. Suddenly, it dawned on me that I wasn’t alone. I had an overpowering sensation that someone else was in the room. Until you’ve experienced that feeling, you can’t understand what it’s like. Your blood is swishing through your veins at 200 mph, only you don’t understand why. Your body reacts a few seconds before your brain does.

The dingy corridors and gloomy wards of a long-abandoned Saudi Arabian hospital have drawn hundreds of amateur ghost hunters who believe it to be haunted by jinn, the malevolent spirits of the Koran and Arabian mythology.

The macabre fascination with Riyadh’s Irqa Hospital, which treated Gulf War combatants in 1991, began with tweeted rumours and escalated to the point where hundreds of youths broke into the grounds, smashing windows and starting fires.

“Teenagers sent text messages calling for an operation against some of the jinn who live in the hospital, and they broke into the hospital and smashed its facilities and burned 60 percent of it,” Okaz newspaper reported last week.

The rampage prompted angry press complaints the authorities were allowing the building to fall into disrepair.

Do buyers have a right to know if a house is haunted? The law requires certain structural details to be disclosed when a home is up for sale, but what about paranormal details?

Material Facts

Although the wording may vary state to state, most real estate laws require sellers to disclose “material facts” such as structural concerns, the age of the roof and shingles, leaks in the foundation and walls, existing mold and mildew, and total square footage. Material facts can also include other items that affect the house’s value such as the amount of property taxes, details about individuals who claim to have an interest in the house, or overlaps on adjacent properties.

A New Jersey couple is suing the landlord of their three-bedroom ranch house in Toms River, claiming it’s haunted, the Asbury Park Press reports.

Josue Chinchilla, 37, and Michele Callan, 36, fled the house in March after staying only one week and want their $2,250 security deposit back.

They claim they had to endure a series of “paranormal activity” at the house, including lights that switch on and off by themselves, clothes and towels mysteriously ejected from closets, unintelligible whispering, footsteps in the kitchen and a mysterious force tugging at bedsheets during the night.

A hearing before Judge Steven F. Nemeth is expected at the end of April, Press reporter Erik Larsen writes.

The most famous address in America–1600 Pennsylvania Avenue–is also perhaps the country’s most famous haunted house. Presidents, first ladies, White House staff members and guests have reported feeling ghostly presences, hearing unexplained noises and even running into actual apparitions–even on the way out of the bathtub, in one particularly famous case.
